Recently Purchased Music... A Spiritual Excercise
For Christmas I received an itunes gift card. It was a lot of fun picking out some music for my ipod. Here are some of the songs I purchased with my gift card...
Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
Accidentally in Love - Counting Crows
Wonder - Natalie Merchant
Kind and Generous - Natalie Merchant
These are Days - 10,000 Maniacs (Natalie Merchant was the lead singer of this band!)
So, why did I purchase these songs, and why do I love them so much? This morning I went for a run and I realized why I like these songs. These songs bring me back to a wonderful time in my life - spring break 1996. I went Marco Island, FL with some friends, and had the best Spring Break ever! We laughed a lot. We listened to each other. We were full of life. It was the perfect Spring Break, and the music we listened to was the music I just purchased.
This morning when I was running I was brought back to a wonderful time and place in my life. It was a time when I experienced a real spring break, one that was completely different that the previous two spring breaks I went on. (There's a reason I didn't purchase Ace of Base. That would bring me back to a bad place in my life.)
It was on that Spring Break with some great friends that I found Jesus. I found Him in a community of friends. A community that loved each other, and laughed together. It was in this community that I felt fully alive.
So, that's why I purchased these songs. They bring me back to a great place. A place of love, laughter, and life.
So, if you see me running down the road singing along with my ipod, I might just be listening to Natalie Merchant, not because she rocks, but because those songs bring me back to a place when I experienced the love of Jesus through community.

Wow, I can even check your blog from China. Glad to hear your hectic weeks are over. Sorry we couldn't connect before we left and that we couldn't come Wed. night. It was just way to crazy! I could not concentrate on anything else. Hope you understand. Have a great week.
PS I have great memories from Marco Island as well. My memories include "Meatloaf"
All good songs Dave! Lots of 10k maniacs stuff is really good. I listened to it a lot in high school and need to revisit it. Counting crows almost always makes the cut for my iPod shuffle too.
Hey,
I just put the second of 5 parts about Counting Crows up on my blog. The latest post is about "Round Here". There's a lot of spiritual analysis of the songs so I think you might like it.
Found you through Google blog search because you mentioned the band.

Back in my radio days, my wife and I met Natalie Merchant. She was really cool. She apologized for being late because she was visiting a local women's care center for homeless. I was leveled at that moment.
