20 Best Youth Pastors...
I just came accross the list of the
Looking at the list makes me ask some questions...
- How did they come up with this list?
- What was the criteria for getting on the list?
- Are you only a good youth pastor if you are in a large church?
- Why are we fascinated with ranking people?
- If I believe in the Bible, wouldn't it be best to be last on the list of youth pastors?
- How much time was wasted on coming up with the list?
- Why isn't
Anyway, interesting list.

because i'm not a very good youth pastor very many days.
i wouldn't really want to be on the list either, cause then the expectation level would be insane and it's hard enough to do this job without having to be scrutinized and ranked.
did you notice only three women were on the list? it was almost all dudes. that doesn't seem right.
also, kurt johnston was the only name i recognized. maybe that's good and it's not just a list of the ones we all know about, but i think you're write about it beign a "big" church mentality here.
so my question would be, if asked, would you let yourself be put on a list like this?
i would hope that even though flattered for a moment, i would decline because if i'm on a list of the best, it separates, ranks and might hurt and devalue my fellow youth workers. we don't need that and the list doesn't do any good.
Here is my question. shouldn't Jesus be on that list. Then that should conclude the list of one. Lists are a way for us humans to feel "special" and valued with great recognition. I think it can cause you to be a bit puffed up and give you the feeling your have it all together. Which i know I don't. So when it comes to the best does it really matter. Lets see who is serving others. Who is doing the stuff that Jesus did. Then when we get to heaven we will have our reward.
I agree. Why is a list necessary? Furthermore, how could you possibly decide who belongs in the top twenty? Is it the people with the most students? The most pool tables and video game systems? The best band? The biggest video screens? Best Sound systems? Coolest couches? Do you have to have a snack bar or a capuccino (sp?) machine to make the list?
Rediculous.
I'm really interested in the criteria the list used to come up with the best 20 best youth pastors. What about the youth pastor in a small town that has 5 kids showing up and their lives are being radically changed by the youth pastor spending time with them?
As I think more and more about this list, the more upset I get. Why does everything have to be a competition? What is our fascination with lists? What do we want always want to rank people and churches in the Christian community?
By the way, no, I don't want to be on this list. I would like the list to be destroyed. I think whoever had the idea to generate a list like this should take a real hard look at their priorites and values. Anyway, that's enough about the list from me.
What's next, the top 20 church janitors.
or top 20 church buildings. Ok. I'm done too. Time to figure out the 20 people I need to go share Jesus with.
