Procrastination

It’s Sunday night at 9:52 pm, and my weekly assignment for my graduate school class is due at midnight. Yes, just over two hours away. Am I nervous? Not at all. First of all, I’ve been in the position too often during this class, so I know how to handle the pressure. Secondly, The assignment isn’t too bad – read an article and write a 250-word review of it. Piece of cake. I should be finished by 11:00. Just in time to watch SportsCenter, if we still had our full cable package. (I’ll blog about that in the future.)

But here’s the question I’m thinking in my head. Why is it so easy to procrastinate? Why do I wait until the last minute to get this assignment done, which happens every week by the way? Here are the only answers I can come up with…
1. Life is busy, and I don’t think about my class until late in the week.
2. I would rather go for a run or watch TV instead of getting ahead on my homework.
3. I need to check to see how my NCAA tournament picks are going.
4. I’m not passionate about “Academic Writing”, which is the class I’m currently enrolled in.

It’s the last answer that I think is the closest to the truth. I just don’t get excited about academic writing. I think writing is important, and I like to do it. After all, I blog. But when it comes to academic writing this class is way to picky, and some of the teacher’s assistants need to get a life. After all, I did get marked down for being too creative in my writing. In fact, they told me “in academic writing we don’t like creative people, and it appears you are a creative person.”

I think that’s it. I procrastinate because I really have no interest in the class and all I need to do is pass. So, I’m off to crank out a 250 word paper about “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers.” Should be a rip rorrin good time. Hopefully I finish by midnight.
