Crazy...

Last night was one of those nights in youth ministry when the kids were crazy! There was so much energy in the room. Kids were bouncing off the walls, literally, and there was no way they were going to be calmed down. I don't know why they were so crazy last night, perhaps it was a full moon. Or maybe they had extra energy because it's finally nice here on a consistent basis, and they are looking forward to tulip time and summer.

In the past, I would have fought to control the kids on a night like last night, and in the past when I did that I ended up frustrated and wondering why I was in youth ministry. But, over time I have learned to enjoy the energy and go with it, and change up the plan if I have too. Now, last night these kids weren't being disrespectful, they were just full of energy. One teenager said; "today has been such a crazy day, and tonight I feel like blowing off some steam, running around, and talking with my friends." Talking with this kid helped me understand what was going on - these kids are in school all day, listening to a bunch of talking heads, and on a night like last night, the last thing they wanted to do was listen to another talking head. So, perhaps the most spiritual thing we did last night was allowing the kids to go a little crazy, and blow off some steam? Or, maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Either way, last night was pretty crazy.
